The life-changing impact of a spinal cord injury

On Behalf of | May 6, 2024 | Injuries, Personal Injury

We all know that car crashes are a daily occurrence in Massachusetts and throughout the country and, unfortunately, some of these crashes can result in serious, life-changing injuries for people involved. In fact, motor vehicle accidents are one of the most common causes of spinal cord injuries in America, for example. A serious spinal cord injury can alter a victim’s life for years to come.

Damage to the spinal cord

An injury to the spinal cord will likely impact almost all of the other areas of a person’s body. After all, the spinal cord is like the nervous system “highway” that connects all of the nerves in person’s body to the brain. Damage to the spinal cord will impact how nervous systems signals get sent to the brain – or maybe even prevent those signals from ever getting through.

Spinal cord injuries may be classified based on the “completeness” of the loss of sensation or movement in the victim’s extremities. For instance, if an injured victim does still have some feeling or use of arms and legs, the spinal cord injury may be classified as “incomplete.” If, however, the injured victim has lost all ability to control extremities or feel sensation in the arms and legs, the injury would likely be classified as “complete.”

Considering your legal options

If you are dealing with a spinal cord injury that was caused due to another party’s negligent or reckless driving, you may be considering your legal options as you confront the fact that your life will look much different going forward. Be sure to get the right information about your potential claim and how you might be able to secure financial compensation to help put your life back in order and treat your injury.
