In May, airbag manufacturer Takata complied with a request to recall various models of front driver and passenger side airbags in an estimated 23.4 million vehicles. On October 30, the list of vehicles with the faulty airbags was updated to include several additional models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fined Takata up to $200 million for the defect, which is a record for a civil penalty.

The problem with the airbags is defective inflators. The propellant used in the inflators has been found to degrade, which can cause airbag ruptures. These ruptures are reported to be responsible for multiple deaths and more than 100 injuries. The ruptured airbags can send pieces of metal shrapnel flying into the faces of drivers and passengers, causing severe or fatal injuries.

If you or a family member is injured by a defective airbag or any vehicle defect, you will need a lawyer to protect your rights and fight the negligent manufacturer for you. Corporations must be held accountable for the damage and loss of life they cause.

As of December 23, 2015, there are eight reported fatalities caused by the faulty airbags. It is possible that number could increase if vehicles are not repaired in time. That’s why it is important to ensure your car is safe.

If you have received a safety recall notice from your car’s manufacturer, be sure to take action immediately. Your vehicle’s manufacturer will replace the airbag inflator or other defective part for free. Find out if your car has any safety recalls by using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s online lookup tool.
