Drunk driving statistics for young people are sobering

According to the National Highway Safety Traffic Safety Administration, 28 people die every day because of drunk driving. The numbers of individuals injured in such accidents is much higher. The NHSTA calculated that costs for alcohol-impaired motor vehicle accidents exceed $199 billion per year across the United States.

While there is hope that circumstances will improve in the coming years, the statistics related to drunk driving remain disturbing. Conviction for drunk driving often does not prevent such behavior from continuing to occur. For example, nearly one-third of drunk driving convictions involve repeat offenders. And estimates show that between 50 to 75 percent of individuals with suspended licenses continue to drive following a drunk driving conviction.

It should concern us all that so many drunk driving accidents involve teenage drivers. Drinking among high school students is all too common. Approximately 30 percent of 8th graders have tried alcohol, and close to half of 10th graders reportedly drink alcohol. Those who start drinking at a young age are far more likely to be involved in a drunk driving crash. While car accidents are already the leading cause of death for teenagers, driving while under the influence of alcohol increases the chance of a fatal crash dramatically.
