Summer safety tips for families

As summer quickly approaches, you might think you know how to keep you and your family safe. There are basic tips you know and use. Wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated are two more obvious tips for warm weather.

But what about summer activities? How can you stay safe while biking, walking or playing with the kids? Here are a few safety tips for all types of summer fun.

Biking

Many people enjoy biking during the warmer months. However, biking on the roads near cars and busy streets can be risky. Here are five tips for bicycle safety:

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Be visible – make sure you wear bright clothing and have reflectors on your bicycle
  • Obey all normal traffic laws

Walking

You may be more inclined to walk places during the summer. Similar to biking, there are a few risks and dangers associated with being a pedestrian. A few safety tips for walking around Massachusetts:

  • Stay visible
  • Use sidewalks and crosswalks where possible
  • Be extra vigilant when crossing roads
  • Try not to get distracted (i.e. stay off your phone)

Being outdoors in the warmer months is fun for you and your family. Spending time outside is a good way to get exercise and spend time with your friends and family. But you should not neglect safety precautions. These are just a few of many safety tips you can use for a variety of outdoor activities in the next few months.
