With summer looming around the corner, you might be planning your annual summer vacation road trip. When it comes to long distance driving, it is important to plan ahead so that you arrive back home safely and comfortably. For instance, you should take steps to avoid “highway hypnosis.” This occurs when you become drowsy or zone out when you are driving for multiple hours.

When you are on a long-haul drive, it is vital that you stay awake, alert and energized. Here are a few tips to help you on your next road trip.

Get enough sleep

That last thing you want to do is to start a road trip exhausted. Be sure to get plenty of sleep for at least two nights before the start of your journey. Getting a minimum of seven hours of sleep for two or three nights prior to your trip will help you to stock up on energy. In addition, try not to drive between 1 and 3 in the afternoon as this is when our bodies tend to crash after a busy morning.

Put fuel in the tank

Your car isn’t the only thing that needs fuel when you go on a road trip. You also need to stay energized by eating foods that are healthy and packed with vitamins. In other words, skip the fast food breaks and instead snack on carrots, almonds and other nutritious snacks while you are on the road.

Hydrate

In addition to healthy snacks, you should keep your water supply well-stocked. Easy access to plenty of water will help you stay hydrated and might come in handy if you experience trouble with your vehicle and find yourself temporarily stuck on the side of the road.

Plan to stop

Taking regular and frequent breaks during long drives is incredibly important. One of the best ways to stay alert is to periodically stop and stretch every two to three hours. When you are planning your trip, include rest stops in your daily driving schedule.

Use good posture

Sitting up straight will help you achieve maximum blood flow while you are driving. This will also help you stay alert. If you feel like you are becoming drowsy, take a deep breath and straighten up your posture.

Laughter is important

Laughing is also a proven way to stay awake. In addition to your favorite road trip playlist, consider bringing along some humorous audio books, podcasts or comedy to listen to.

Driving for multiple hours on a long distance trip can be enjoyable if you plan and prepare for it. While the above tips can help on your next road trip, you still need to remember to watch for reckless or negligent drivers.

Even though staying alert while behind the wheel can go a long way toward avoiding a collision, it is not always possible to avoid a car wreck. If you have been the victim of a car accident, you might be able to file a claim in Massachusetts for the compensation you deserve.
