You get in the car, close your door and then what do you do next? Turn on the car? Hit “play” on your playlist? What about putting on your seatbelt? Putting on your seatbelt should be a part of your routine as you prepare to hit the road.

Wearing a seatbelt can make all the difference if you’re involved in a crash. By wearing your seatbelt, you immediately increase your chances for surviving a car accident by 50 percent. However, for seatbelts to be effective, you must wear one properly.

How to wear your seatbelt

It seems silly that there could be a wrong way to wear a seatbelt but it’s true.

The Massachusetts Department of Motor Vehicles says that lap belts fit tight and flat over the hips and shoulder belts should fall across the left shoulder and chest. You should never wear your seatbelt across your face or neck. Find the seatbelt adjustments in your vehicle if your seatbelt isn’t fitting properly.

Twisted, damaged or worn seatbelts may not provide proper protection in the event of an accident. If a seatbelt in your vehicle needs replacing, take it to your dealer. Most automobile manufacturers provide lifetime seatbelt warranties for their vehicles.

If latching your seatbelt is the first thing you do after entering your vehicle, that’s fantastic. However, it’s also important to make sure you and your passengers are also wearing them correctly to receive the safety benefits from a seatbelt. You should also have worn or damaged seatbelts replaced by your dealer as soon as possible. Knowing to wear your seatbelt is important, but so is knowing how to wear one.
