Strong wind, heavy rain and safe driving

As a Massachusetts resident, you know that the weather can change without notice. For example, one second you're driving with the top down, enjoying the sun, but the next you're in the middle of a rainstorm.

Driving in inclement weather is easier said than done, as you need to immediately adjust your style to minimize the risk of an accident. Even then, you can't control other drivers, so there's always a possibility of running into trouble.

Here are three things you can do when driving in strong wind:

  • Keep both hands on the wheel: This allows you to maintain full control of your vehicle, even when wind gusts pick up.
  • Anticipate gusts: There are certain areas in which wind gusts are more common, such as when driving over a bridge or on a straight section of highway.
  • Watch large vehicles: Commercial trucks, buses and other high profile vehicles have more trouble maintaining control in windy conditions.

Strong wind is often accompanied by heavy rain. In this case, these tips will come in handy:

  • Slow down: You need more time to stop when the roads are slick, so you'll want to slow down when the rain picks up.
  • Use your headlights: This allows you to more easily see the road and other vehicles (not to mention pedestrians). It also improves the likelihood of other drivers seeing you.
  • Leave more space: It's always a good idea to leave more space between other vehicles, as this gives you more time to react to traffic changes.

If, for any reason, you aren't comfortable driving in the conditions, it's better to be safe than sorry. Move your car to safety and stay where you are until conditions improve. Even though it will slow you down, it's better than taking a risk and hoping you aren't involved in a motor vehicle accident.

Strong wind and heavy rain are common in Massachusetts, so you must prepare yourself to drive in these conditions every now and again.

If another driver doesn't take caution and causes an accident, you should learn more about the steps you can take to hold them responsible. You have legal rights and you want to protect them.
