As a pedestrian, safety comes first

As a pedestrian, there are times when you are in a hurry to reach your destination. For example, if you are walking to work and running late. There are also times when you're a pedestrian for pleasure, such as if you are jogging or riding your bicycle.

Regardless of where you are going or what you are doing, safety should always come first.

Here are some of the many things you can do as a pedestrian to help prevent an accident with a motor vehicle:

  • Wear bright colored clothing if you're in close proximity to the road during the early morning, evening or nighttime hours
  • Cross the street at crosswalks, when possible
  • Let the "walk" and "do not walk" signals at intersections guide you
  • Never dart in front of a vehicle, as the driver may not see you

As you do these things, you hope that drivers are taking just as much caution. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing for sure.

Here are some of the things a driver could do that result in a accident:

  • Distracted driving, such as sending a text message or talking on the phone
  • Disobeying traffic laws, signs and signals
  • Speeding and other forms of reckless driving
  • Failure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Disregarding traffic conditions
  • Disregarding weather conditions
  • Drowsy driving

With such as long list, it's easy to see why pedestrian-vehicle accidents continue to occur.

For example, you think that a driver sees you in a crosswalk, but he or she is actually answering a text message. In this case, the chance of the person hitting you with his or her vehicle is much greater, as they may not even know you are there.

If you are part of a pedestrian-vehicle accident there's a good chance you will suffer a serious injury. This is why you need to seek immediate medical assistance.

Once you receive treatment and have a long-term recovery plan in place, learn more about the cause of the accident. This will help you decide what to do next in regard to holding the driver responsible and protecting your legal rights.
