Spring weather can bring trouble to the roadways

As a Massachusetts resident, you know that spring is an enjoyable time of the year. You also know that the weather doesn’t always cooperate, as it can change on a dime.

If you find yourself behind the wheel in inclement weather, it’s important to quickly process what’s going on to lessen the risk of being part of an accident.

More specifically, spring and summer storms in Massachusetts can bring both heavy rain and strong winds to the area.

Here are some top tips for driving in heavy rain:

  • Slow down, as the slick surface can make it more difficult to stop your vehicle. You never want to drive too fast in the rain, especially if visibility is limited.
  • Use your headlights. It can be a challenge to see the road ahead in driving rain, so make sure you use your headlights at all times. Also, this makes it easier for other drivers to spot your vehicle.
  • Leave more space. Don’t drive too closely to other vehicles, as your stopping distance won’t be as good in wet conditions.

Now, let’s review some tips for driving in strong winds:

  • Keep track of larger vehicles. Commercial trucks and buses, for example, are more likely to lose control and tip in strong winds.
  • Keep both hands on the wheel. A wind gust can quickly take control of your vehicle, so using both hands to maintain control is a must.
  • Watch for debris on the road. When the wind picks up it’s not out of the question for debris to cover the road. This can range from tree branches to garbage cans among many other items.

If you’re driving in heavy rain and/or strong winds and don’t feel confident in your ability to remain safe, move to the side of the road and wait for the storm to pass.

In the event of an accident, such as one caused by another driver, move to safety and call 911.

Once you receive treatment, make sure you contact your insurance company to provide information on the accident. Also, take the time to learn more about the cause and your legal rights.
