Tips for avoiding burn injuries and fires during the holidays

Winter is all about warmth. A warm fire on a cold winter night, cooking a comforting meal, and lighting a Christmas tree or menorah in celebration of the holidays are just a few examples.

At this same time of year, however, there are a higher number of fire-related incidents throughout the U.S. compared to other months according to the United States Fire Administration (USFA).

There are some steps you can take to prevent serious injury during the holidays while still staying warm and enjoying the season.

  1. Smoke detectors: Make sure you have smoke detectors in place and check the batteries to ensure that they are working properly.
  2. Fire extinguishers: Whether by the fire or in the kitchen, it is important to keep a fire extinguisher within easy reach to quickly put out fires. Check the expiration date so that you can be sure it will work if you need it.
  3. Slow down: It can be easy to feel hurried and stressed during the holidays. It is better to be late and safe, however, than injured. Nearly half of all residential building fires started as a result of cooking in 2013. So, take your time when cooking holiday meals this season.
  4. Watch candles: Don’t leave a candle burning when you leave the house or when you leave the room. A pet or child can easily knock them over when you are not around.
  5. Keep combustibles away from flames: Don’t keep presents to close to the fire. The leading cause of residential fires in the U.S. is having a heat source to close to combustibles.
