Two Gravely Wounded in Truck Crash in Sturbridge

On July 18, the driver and passenger of a tractor-trailer truck were badly hurt when their vehicle flipped on its side on an exit ramp of Interstate 84 in Sturbridge. Both victims were thrown from the cab of the truck and endured critical injuries. They were flown to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center - University Campus in Worcester for treatment.

When the truck crashed and overturned, the roof broke open causing its load of watermelons and cardboard crates to spill out onto the ramp. Lucky Trucking LLC owns the truck. Authorities from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Team as well as the state police investigated the scene. Sturbridge health officials declared the watermelons not fit for human consumption and directed that they be destroyed.

A witness to the accident said that it is common for trucks to "fly through the ramp and stop sign." She stated that those not familiar with the ramp think they are entering another "divided highway." Also, she recommended that the state enlarge the curve of the ramp so it is not as abrupt.

It is very lucky that no other parties were involved in the incident. Truck accidents can be extremely dangerous, especially if the trucks are hauling hazardous materials.

Thankfully, no other motorists were injured in this accident. However, if someone else had been injured in this case, she might have had a personal injury claim against the trucking company and other responsible parties. If she could prove negligence on the part of the driver, she would be eligible to receive legal compensation for physical and financial losses. Some of the areas that would be considered in calculating those damages are: disfigurement, lost income, pain and suffering, medical bills and lost earning capacity.
